A.B Stoddard Dies Today From Injury
Andrew B. Stoddard, 78, was fatally injured last Tuesday evening in front of the Recreation Club building when he was struck by a car driven by Merlyn Wee.Wee was coming onto Central Ave. from the south on Seventh street. As the green light came on he turned east. Stoddard had just passed between parked cars and was at the time coming out of the third car to the east of the corner. He stepped from behind the car into the street. Wee saw him but not in time to stop.
Stoddard was knocked to the pavement with great force. People standing on the street rushed to his assistance. He was bleeding from the ears. The police car rushed him to the Coleman hospital.
It was found his collar bone was broken, both bones of the right arm were broken and his head was badly bruised. There seemed from the start but little hope for his recovery, according to Drs. Clark and Johnston who attended him.
It was found yesterday that Mr. Stoddard had contracted pneumonia which resulted in his death last evening.
Mr. Stoddard was a heavy man and does not get around very well. He was far enough down the street as he came from behind the car that he could not be seen from the corner. The police say the Wee car stopped in about four feet.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Mahlum and Anderson funeral chapel Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. The Rev. F.W. Ortmeyer will officiate. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 9, 1940)
