Mrs. Vedder Dies at 89 After Illness
Mrs. Mary Williams Vedder, 89, died at 1:20 p.m. Sunday [May 9, 1965] at Holy Family Hospital where she had been a resident since January 1964. She had been in failing health for a number of years, and death was attributed to infirmities of advanced age.

The daughter of Orville and DeEtta Williams, she was born Oct. 8, 1875, in Rush Lake Township, Palo Alto County. She received her education in county schools there and for many years she played piano with a dance band.

Her marriage to Isaac Vedder took place in September, 1891, at Emmetsburg. They purchased the home farm from her parents, and lived there until their retirement, when they moved to Emmetsburg.

Following her husband’s death in 1914 [1915], Mrs. Vedder served as a practical nurse in Emmetsburg for many years. After her retirement from nursing she lived with her daughter until January 1964.

She was a member of First Methodist Church of Emmetsburg, Rebekah Lodge and the Women’s Relief Corps.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. M.J. (Gladys) Fogde of Graettinger, Mrs. E.F. (Alcia) Leach of Gardner, Mass., Mrs. L.W. (Ora) Loving of Estherville, and Mrs. T.L. (Eunice) Hick of Rochester, Minn.; one sister, Mrs. L.E. Chambard of Humboldt; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, one son, George Vedder, two grandsons and four brothers.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Reese Funeral Home with Dr. M.J. Fodgde and Rev. William R. Noland officiating. Mrs. Hoyt Luithly will be organist and Mrs. Harold Danielson and Geralyn will sing “Sun of My Soul” and “Ivory Palaces.”

Burial will be in East Side cemetery. Pallbearers will be Frank Vedder, Verlyn Vedder, Wayne Huntsinger, Fay Higgins, Kenneth Jacobson and Raymond Rose. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 10, 1965)
