Robert "Bob" Frederick Seylar 1921-1998

Robert Frederick Seylar, the son of Fred and Mary (Rider) Seylar, was born February 24, 1921, in Swea City, Iowa and departed this life at his home in Estherville, Iowa, on Monday, August 24, 1998, at the age of 77 years and six months.

Bob received his education in the Swea City schools, graduating from Swea city High School in 1939. After high school he moved to California, where he was employed by Douglas Aircraft. In 1944 he entered the United States Army and served in the European Theater during World War Two. Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to Estherville and was employed as a salesman for Motor Supply and Rhodes Motors in Estherville.

On June 5, 1950, bob was united in marriage to Martha Robinson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. In 1956, Bob began his employment with the Estherville Police Department and served several years as Chief of Police before his retirement in 1979. Martha died in 1978. On January 20, 1979, he was united in marriage to Darlene Bendixen in Estherville. The couple continued to make their home in Estherville.

Bob was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3388 and the American Legion Post 91, both of Estherville; the Iowa State Policeman's Association and the Iowa State Police Chiefs Organization. Bob also served on the founders Board of EMCO Credit Union.

Mr. Seyler is survived by his wife, Darlene; his sons, David Seylar; Donald Seylar and his wife, Debra all of Estherille; Dale Seylar and his wife, Jennifer of mason City, IA; step-son, Robert Bendixen and his wife, Janet of Estherville; step-daughter, Dee Hanson and her husband, Terry of Wayne, NE; his grandchildren, Mary and Christopher Seylar; Andrew and Callie Seylar; Michele Etherington; Christina Haerich; and Scott, Matthew and Jason Bendixen; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Etherington, Tallon Haerich, and Melissa and Joseph Bendixen; and one brother, Maurice Seylar and his wife, Marvel of Estherville. He has been preceded in death by his first wife, Martha; his stepson, Ron Bendixen; daughter-in-law, Patricia; his parents; one brother, Kenneth; and an infant sister.
