S. Mathison Dead
S. Mathison died last Monday afternoon at 5:30 o’clock of cancer of the stomach. Mr. Mathison had been suffering with the disease since a year ago last March. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon and the remains were interred in the Norwegian cemetery.Mr. Mathison leaves a widow and a three-year-old boy to which the community extend their sympathy.
S. Mathison was born in Norway October, 1865. Fourteen years ago he moved to Estherville where he followed his profession as stone-mason. Six years ago he sent to the old country for Miss Ella Nelson, the playmate of his youth. They had arranged eight years previous that when Mr. Mathison was prepared she should come across the waters and become the bride of the one she had loved since their [they] frolicked together in their Norwegian community. She came and they were married in Estherville, where they have since lived most of the time during the past six years. One child was born to the happy couple.
Their happy married life was marred by alternate sickness of Mr. and Mrs. Mathison, and the money which Mr. Mathison made while in good health went to pay doctor bills in one way and another. He was a model husband through all misfortune. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, June 18, 1902)
