Death of Hazel Lee Collins
The Angel of Death entered the home of County Recorder Samuel Collins last Saturday night and bore away to heaven the pet of the household, little Hazel, who was sick only about twenty four hours with scarlet fever. The doting parents and other near relatives are nearly crushed by the terrible blow that has bereft them of their darling and the sympathy entertained for them is deep and general.Owing to the contagious nature of the disease a funeral was not held. The casket containing the little body was taken from the house direct to the cemetery by friends Sunday afternoon, it being nearly hidden from view by beautiful flowers that rested upon it. At the cemetery appropriate exercises were conducted by Rev. Coats who read the following poems: (too faint to read)
Hazel’s age was three years, seven months, and twenty-four days, and being a very interesting child was beloved by all who knew her.
The parents desire us to return grateful thanks to all who in any way assisted at the funeral, or during the short illness of the little one whom they loved better than life. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, March 1, 1894)
