E.M. Pickell Dies Wednesday After Short Illness
Another pioneer resident, Eugene M. Pickell, who has lived in this county for over 50 years passed away in Holy Family hospital Wednesday [July 7, 1948] morning.

He has resided in Gruver territory for more than 50 years. He has farmed, been connected with the railway, barbered and been a restaurant owner. He has been in failing health with a heart ailment. He became seriously and suddenly ill on Saturday and was rushed to the hospital.

He was born September 23, 1864. His wife [Mable Shaw] died about two years ago. He resided in Gruver until her death and went to Illinois to make his home with a daughter for a time. He returned in September.

He is survived by two sons, James and Clayton of Freeport, Ill., and five daughters, Mrs. Harry Whitacre of this city, Mrs. Norman Andrews and Mrs. Lewis Thorsland and Mrs. I. Sampson of Gruver, and Mrs. James Whitacre of Freeport, Ill.

Funeral services will be from the Sternborg Funeral parlors on Friday at 1:30 and from the Presbyterian Church at 2:00. Interment will be in East Side cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, July 8, 1948)
