Spirit Lake Woman Dies; Rites Set
Mrs. Herbert (Catherine Elizabeth) Papenfuhs, 64, of rural Spirit Lake died at 2 a.m. Oct. 30 in her farm home. She had been ill with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Gruver, with the Rev. P.L. Mork officiating. Burial will be made in East Side Cemetery. Friends may visit at Reese-Henry Funeral Home, Estherville, until noon Thursday.

She was born Oct. 24, 1909 in Gilmore City to Mr. and Mrs. John Cordes. On Feb. 12, 1935, she was married to Herbert W. Papenfuhs in Fort Dodge. They farmed in Emmet and Kossuth counties and for four years near Spirit Lake. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Gruver.

Surviving are her husband, Herbert, rural Spirit Lake; two sons, Herbert Eugene Papenfuhs, both of Spirit Lake; one daughter, Mrs. Ernest (Mary Catherine) Wheeler, Swea City; four grandchildren; three brothers, Gerhard Cordes, Houston, Texas, Gilbert Cordes, Swea City, and John A. Cordes, Rolfe; two sisters, Mrs. B.M. Cuthbertson, Havelock, and Miss Bertha Cordes, Rolfe.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 31, 1973)
