Funeral services for Herbert William Papenfuhs, 78, of Swea City were held February 4, 1988 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Swea City, Pastor James Fowler officiated. Herbert passed away at the Fairmont Community Hospital on Sunday, January 31, 1988.

Herbert was born March 16, 1909 in Wusterwitz, Germany to William and Hulda (Blumberg) Papenfuhs. He received his education in Germany. He moved with his parents from Germany in 1923, settling in Eldora, Iowa, and moved to Rolfe in 1928. On February 12, 1935, he married Catherine E. Cordes at Ft Dodge, IA. The couple farmed in Kossuth and Emmet Counties, moving to Swea City in 1941 and into Estherville in 1965. They later moved to the Spirit Lake/Okoboji area, where Mr. Papenfuhs retired in 1977.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church south of Grover.

He is survived by two sons: Eugene of Fair Play, MO and Roger of Woodbridge, VA, and one daughter, Mrs. Carl (Mary) Griffith of Swea City; 7 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert of Estherville and two sisters, Margaret Jones of Fair Play, MO and Elizabeth Lindsey of Rolfe, IA. He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

Interment was in the East Side Cemetery at Estherville, Iowa. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February, 1988)
