Mrs. Sophia Schacherer Dies at 87
Mrs. William (Sophia) Schacherer, 87, resident of Emmet County for more than 65 years, died today at 12:32 a.m. at Holy Family Hospital.Mrs. Schacherer had been in fairly good health and was active until she suffered a stroke last Friday forenoon at her home. She was taken to the hospital at that time.
She was a native of Germany, having been born there July 7, 1876 to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Anton. She came with her parents to the United States when seven years of age. The family settled first at Winette, Ill., and the children received their education in the Joliet, Ill. schools. The Antons later moved to Strawberry Point.
The former Sophia Anton and William Henry Schacherer were married Feb. 17, 1879 at Edgewood, Iowa, and shortly after their marriage moved to Emmet County where they farmed in the High Lake and Wallingford area until 21 years ago. At that time they retired and moved to Estherville. Mrs. Schacherer did several years ago.
Mrs. Schacherer was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and of the Altar and Rosary Society.
She is survived by two sons, Theodore of Estherville and LeRoy of Wallingford; 21 grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, a son, Ralph, her parents and three brothers and two sisters. She was the last remaining member of her family.
Funeral services are to be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. James H. Duhigg officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
Rosary will be Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at Fuhrman Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. today until time of services Friday morning.
Pallbearers are to be six grandsons of Mrs. Schacherer: William, James, Robert, Louis, Eugene and Jerry Schacherer. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 1, 1964)
