Mrs. E.J. Smith Dies At Hospital
Mrs. Edward J. Smith, 85, longtime resident of Emmet County, died today about 7 a.m. at Holy Family Hospital. Her death was attributed to complications of advanced age.Julia Veronica Flaherty was born Nov. 20, 1879, at Waterloo and moved with her parents at the age of six, where she attended school.
She was married Feb. 14, 1906, to Edward Smith and moved to Emmet County, where they lived on a farm near Raleigh. Mr. Smith died June 14, 1955.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, Orville and Ward, both of Estherville; two daughters, Mrs. Urban (Irene) Pluth and Mrs. Jake (Alvena) Phillips of Spirit Lake; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Stratton of Pleasant Hill, Calif., and Mrs. Elizabeth Miller of Great Falls, Mont.; and one brother, Marvin Flaherty of Emmetsburg.
She was a long-time member of St. Patrick’s Church and a member of the Womans Altar and Rosary Society.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and eight brothers and sisters.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith are to be Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, Rev. Gerald Fangman officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
Rosary will be said at the Fuhrman Funeral Home, Friday at 8:30 p.m.
Friends may call after 7 p.m. Thursday.
The pallbearers are to be her nephews. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 21, 1965)
