Earl J. Fries, 1913-2002

ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for Earl J. Fries, 89, of Spirit Lake will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Jerry Cosgrove officiating. Interment will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Estherville. He died on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002 at Hilltop Nursing Care Center in Spirit Lake.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. today at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. in the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Chapel.

Earl was born on Dec. 11, 1913 in Emmetsburg, the son of Ross and Mary (Korleski) Fries. He received his early education in the Emmetsburg and Cylinder area and later began farming there.

On June 27, 1938, Earl was united in marriage to Helen Hand at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. The family moved to the Superior area in 1941.

Earl loved the land and worked hard at producing good crops. He always had big gardens and following his retirement in 1975, when they moved to Estherville, he had a garden at the Resch farm with as many as three hundred tomato plants.

He also enjoyed woodworking and loved to give his latest creations and garden produce to his family and friends. Earl and Helen moved to Hilltop Nursing Care Center in April of 2000.

Earl was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville for over sixty years.

Earl is survived by his wife, Helen of Spirit Lake; one son, Jim Fries and his wife, Sandy of Glendale Heights, Ill.; two daughters, Joan Resch and her husband, Ronald of Spirit Lake; Mary Johnson and her husband, Lyn of Milford; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two brothers, Howard Fries of Emmetsburg; and Vince Fries of Tempe, Ariz.

He has been preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and four brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 27, 2002)
