John Daniel McManness, the son of John William and Martha (Haavardsholm) McManness, was born February 13, 1928, in Estherville, Iowa and departed this life on Thursday, October 11, 2001, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville at the age of 73 years, seven months and 28 days.
John lived his entire life in the Estherville area. He received his education in the Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 1946. John attended Union Baptist Church and Sunday School and accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior in 1946 in Lawrence, Kansas. He was baptized in 1946. He entered the United States Army Airborne in 1946 and served in the 82nd Airborne Division. In 1948, he was discharged from military service and returned to Estherville where he attended Estherville Junior College.
On February 10, 1949, he was united in marriage to Jean Clegg in Cussita, Georgia. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Estherville. John was employed by John Morrell and Company for twenty-six years. Later he worked as a salesperson for Culligan for eight years. John especially enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, hunting, woodworking, music and reading.
He was a member of Grandview Baptist Church in Estherville. Over the years he served as deacon, trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, and various other offices in the church. John attended Men's Bible Study also. He has officiated at church services numerous times in the absence of a minister. John was also a member of American Legion Post 91 and a member of the Gideons in Estherville.
John is survived by his wife, Jean; two daughters, Betty Lukins and her husband Dennis; Debra Satern and her husband, Steve; three granddaughters, Melisa Lukins; Janell Lukins and Ariel Moore; one grandson, John Daniel Moore; one great-grandson, Spenser Lukins, all of Estherville; two sisters, Eva Bennis of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Estella Harmon and her husband, Richard of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and one sister-in-law, Annabelle McManus of Fonda, Iowa. John has been preceded in death by one granddaughter, Krista Lukins; his parents; two brothers, Olaf McManus; Robert McManness; three brothers who died in infancy; and two sisters, Anita Tostenrude; and Ruth Lauritsen.
