McManness Rites Will Be Thursday
John William McManness, Estherville resident for 28 years, died at 5 a.m. yesterday at his home in Estherville.Mr. McManness was born July 3, 1882, at Spring Bluffs, Mo., the son of Samuel William McManness and Martha Elizabeth Boone McManness. He was married Dec. 18, 1912, at Marshalltown. The couple lived in Washington, Mo., until they moved to their present home in Estherville in 1925. Mr. McManness worked for the city of Estherville until he became blind.
Nine children were born to this union, seven of whom are living. They are Anita Tostenrud of Ceylon, Minn., Eva Bennis of St. Paul, Minn., Olaf McManness of Dolliver, Ruth Lauritsen of Spirit Lake, Estella Harmon of Spencer, John McManness of Spirit Lake and Robert. His wife and 19 grandchildren also survive.
Preceding Mr. McManness in death were two children, Virgil McManness and Richard, a twin of Robert.
Also surviving his death are three sisters, Mrs. Betty Fann of Lawrence, Kans., Mrs. Lula Farrell of Union, Mo., and Mrs. Sarah Luekke of St. Louis, Mo.; and two brothers, Robert and Soney McManness of Lawrence, Kans. Three brothers preceded him in death, George McManness of La Mesa, Calif., David of Lawrence, Kans., and Virgil of St. Louis, Mo.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Union Baptist church, the Rev. Raymond Larsen officiating. Burial will be in East Side cemetery. His body will lie in state from 10 a.m. Wednesday until Thursday noon at the Sternborg funeral home and then will be taken to the church where his body will lie in state up to the time of the service.
