Girl Dies in Accident
The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office recorded its first 1968 fatality early Sunday morning two miles west of Estherville near the Estherville Golf and Country Club.

Killed in a one-car accident was Nettie Ann Mann, 18, Estherville. Three other persons were injured.

John Charles Hassel, 23, Estherville, was the driver of the car. He was treated for face and shoulder lacerations at Holy Family Hospital and released. Passengers being treated at Holy Family Hospital are: Peggy Anderson, 18, Estherville, and Alan Pluth, 26, St. Paul. Both are listed in good condition. Miss Anderson fractured her right collarbone and Pluth broke several ribs.

Miss Mann died Sunday [May 12, 1968] night at 8:37 at Holy Family Hospital. She never regained consciousness. Death was attributed to severe head injuries. She also suffered multiple chest and abdominal injuries, a broken hip and a broken leg.

All the occupants were thrown from the car, according to officers who investigated the scene. Seat belts were installed in the car but were not in use at the time of the accident, they said.

The Hassel car was traveling west on County Blacktop B, about one mile west of the Golf and Country Club, and missed a curve to the left and went into the unimproved portion of the right of way between the black top and a gravel road, according to authorities.

Miss Mann was born Oct. 21, 1949, at Estherville to Mr. and Mrs. Fay Mann.

She graduated from Estherville High School in 1967. She had lived all her life in Estherville and had been employed at the Holy Family Hospital since June of 1967.

She was a member of the Union Baptist Church.

Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fay Mann of Estherville; six brothers, Fay Mann, Jr., of Joliet, Ill., Orville, David, Jerry, Timothy, and Perry, all of Estherville; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Keeler, Estherville; and paternal grandfather, Lyle Mann, Burt.

Services will be Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Union Baptist Church in Estherville, with the Rev. Rawlin Johnson officiating.

Burial will be in East Side Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Reese-Henry Funeral Home of Estherville after 6 p.m. Tuesday until noon on Thursday when the casket will be taken to the church. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 13, 1968)
