Estherville Man Victim of Viet War
David Lyle Mann, 20, was killed in action in Vietnam last Thursday morning, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fay Mann of Estherville, were notified yesterday.

The Manns were personally told of their son’s death by 2nd Lt. Richard Chandler of Fort Dodge. A telegram sent from Washington said that PFC Mann was killed in a “combat operation against hostile forces.”

Further details concerning Mann’s death and the return of the body to Estherville will be made available to the family Tuesday.

Mann, a 1968 graduate of Estherville High School, joined the army Oct. 8, 1968. He was sent to Vietnam on March 13.

Mann is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fay Mann, and five brothers: Fay Jr., Orville, Jerry Dean, Timothy and Perry, all of Estherville. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 9, 1969)

Pfc. David Mann Killed in Vietnam
Killed in combat in Vietnam June 5 was another Iowan, Army Pfc. David Mann, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fay L. Mann of Estherville.

David had been in the Army nine months and in Vietnam three months.

He is survived by five brothers as well as his parents.

His father is a nephew of Mrs. Jennie Hansen and well known in the Buffalo Center area. (Buffalo Center Tribune, Buffalo Center, IA, June 12, 1969)

Fallen Soldier Honored
Yesterday afternoon, family, army regulars, veterans’ organizations, and friends helped honor David Lyle Mann, a 20-year-old soldier who was killed in action in Vietnam June 5.

Funeral services were held at the Union Baptist Church in Estherville for Pfc. Mann. An honor guard was formed by the local American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and World War I Barracks.

Army regulars, including a firing squad from the First Cavalry of Ft. Leavenworth, conducted military services at East Side Cemetery.

Also helping in the military rites were the escort, Sp-5 Benjamin Mercado, stationed at Ft. Riley Kan.; Lt. Richard Chandler, stationed at Ft. Dodge who notified Mann’s parents of his death; and Col. William Batt, army advisor stationed at Algona.

Sp-5 Mercado and Lt. Chandler folded the flag on the casket, and Chandler presented the flag to the Mann family.

The Estherville High School Class of 1968 is asked to meet in the high school cafeteria Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to discuss a memorial for Pfc. Mann. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 17, 1969)
