Body Found Hanging in Corn Crib at Home Near Triumph
James Maloney, who formerly lived on a farm east of this city committed suicide at his home at Triumph, Minnesota last Saturday morning. Mrs. Maloney had went to town for a short time, leaving Mr. Maloney in the best of spirits and his usual health. A daughter was home with him and two sons were working in the field. As Mrs. Maloney returned home the daughter ran to meet her saying that the father was hanging in the corn crib. Mrs. Maloney called the boys from the field and hurried to the scene. She with the two boys cut the body down just as Mr. Maloney breathed his last breath.

He had gone to the drive way of the corn crib, adjusted the rope to a rafter and stepped off the wagon upon which he had climbed and strangled to death. His feet were only a short distance from the ground and he could have saved himself at any time by reaching out and taking hold of the wagon box. Mr. Maloney had been in poor health for the past few years and it is thought that this fact was the cause of his rash act. Mr. and Mrs. Maloney moved to Triumph something over a year ago, from this place, having made Estherville their home for many years.

Mr. Maloney was born at Orangeville, Canada January 25, 1860 and died at his home near Triumph, Minnesota May 21, 1921 at the age of 61 years, 3 months and 21 days. When nine years old he moved with his parents to Johnson county, Iowa and later moved to Green county where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage to Miss Lillia Bishop, March 24, 1886. To this union were born six children. The first dying in infancy. Those left to mourn his death are his wife and five children namely, Viola and Ora at home, James Jr. and Mrs. Ivol Clark of Estherville, Mrs. James Spencer of Fairmont, Minn. and two grandchildren. Also five brothers and one sister. Mr. Maloney was a loving husband and a kind father and will be greatly missed in his home.

Those from away who were present at the funeral were his brothers George of Jefferson, Iowa and William of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bishop of Pocahontas, Iowa, Anson Jackson of Toledo, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Snyder of Perry, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Bishop of Ceylon, Minn.

Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Estherville, Tuesday afternoon, May 24th. L.R. Phillips in charge of the services. Interment in the East Side Cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, May 25, 1921)
