Estherville – Services for Roy Joseph Smith, 72, Estherville, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Mr. Smith died Saturday [May 9, 1981] morning at Clarksen Hospital, Omaha, Neb.

A parish Rosary will be said at 8 o’clock and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 8:30 o’clock tonight at Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of services.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smith, he was born Jan. 30, 1909, at Volin, S.D., and received his education in Volin schools and graduating from Yankton, S.D., high school. He also attended Springfield Normal School, Springfield, S.D.

He was married to Alma Hansen on Feb. 16, 1933, at Yankton and the couple lived in Volin and Yankton until moving to Estherville. He was a district manager for the Moorman Manufacturing Seed Company at the time of his retirement.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus, where he served two terms as grand knight; member of the Estherville Elks Lodge, where he served as exalted ruler; Loyal Order of the Moose, where he was a past governor; a member of the Moose 25 Club and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church 55 Plus Club. He was also instrumental in starting the Knights of Columbus radio Rosary.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Alma, Estherville; four daughters, Patricia Carr, Spirit Lake, Jean Kincaid, Austin, Texas, Colleen Mahoney, Omaha, Neb., and Sharon Patterson, Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons, James Smith, Golden, Colo., and Michael Smith, Union Lake, Mich.; 25 grandchildren; one brother, John Smith, Armstrong; and four sisters, Ellen Wood, Storm Lake, Kathleen Huber, Portland, Ore., Rose O’Donnall and Marion King, both of Elmore, Minn.

He was preceded in death by one son, one grandson, his parents, two brothers and one sister.

The family is requesting that memorial be given to Emmet County Handicapped Opportunities, Inc., or the American Heart Fund. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 12, 1981)
