Francis Sheda, Sr.
Estherville – Services for Francis John Sheda, Sr., 56, will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Albert O. Grendler officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Military services will be observed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He died Sunday, April 22, 1984, at his home.Friends may call at the Henry and Olson Funeral Home in Estherville after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Legion of Mary Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. and Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. both at the funeral home.
Sheda was born Nov. 26, 1927 at Chelsea, Tama County, Iowa. His parents were Antone and Mary (Kosta) Sheda. On April 17, 1946, he was united in marriage with Donna Tarvestad at Petersburg, Va. The couple moved to Estherville in 1955 where he barbered for 15 years. He worked with Veterans’ Affairs from 1957 until he got his full commission in 1970 and he continued to work for the Veterans’ Affairs Department as Director until he retired due to ill health in 1983.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus; Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served 1945-48 and 1950-51.
Survivors include his wife, Donna, Estherville; six sons: Frank, Dubuque; Joe, Patrick and Nicholas, Estherville; Michael of Spencer, Albert, Big Stone City, S.D.; three daughters: Mrs. James (Theresa) Justice, Panama City, Fla.; Mrs. David (Sue) Snyder and Mrs. Dale (Chris) Snyder, both of Estherville; 26 grandchildren; three brothers: Ludvick and Tony, Chelsea and Bill of Rochester, Minn.; two sisters: Donna Suchy, Belle Plaine, and Mrs. Bruce (Vange) Cook, Hawaii.
He was preceded in death by one son, Peter Michael, parents and two sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 24, 1984)
