Estherville – Services for Richard Vincent Maloney, 85, Estherville, will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Albert O. Grendler officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. He died Thursday, May 29, 1986 at Holy Family Hospital.
Friends may call at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville after 3 p.m. Sunday. Legion of Mary Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. and Parish Rosary at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
He was born July 30, 1900 at LeMars, the son of James and Mattie (Benedict) Maloney. He attended Emmetsburg schools. On Jan. 21, 1920 he was united in marriage with Hallie G. Richards at Pocahontas. The couple moved to Estherville in 1921 where he was employed by the Vindicator and Republican Newspaper. He followed sports closely and in 1926 coined the nickname Midgets for Estherville’s athletic teams. He worked for the paper until 1936 when he started with the Post Office. In 1968 he retired after 31 years as Postal Clerk in Estherville. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church; Knights of Columbus and Legion of Mary.
Survivors include two sons: Mike, Estherville and Jim, Minneapolis, Minn.; five daughters: Mrs. Clifford (Theris) Gill, San Diego, Cal., Mrs. Patricia Lane, Bloomington, Ill., Mrs. Stan (Marcella) Brewster, LaMirada, Cal., Mrs. Richard (Mattie Ann) Kay, Wadena, Minn. and Mrs. Lloyd (Virginia) Dokter, Minneapolis; 38 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude Diedrich, California.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1934; a daughter Shiela; six sisters and one brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 31, 1986)
