Searchers Recover Woman’s Body at Pool Near Marathon
Searchers Monday recovered the body of Mrs. Gladys Lundberg, 58, of Graettinger from the pool in the town park west of Marathon.

Sheriff Harry Dreyer of Buena Vista County had been called to Marathon Sunday to investigate after it was reported that Mrs. Lundberg’s car had been in the park for two days. Her purse, driver’s license, coat and scarf were found, and footprints were traced from the car to the edge of the water.

Marks in the ice indicted that she had walked out about 100 feet before the ice gave way. The water at this point was about 12 feet deep.

Fire Chief Harold Stanton of Storm Lake led dragging oporations Monday morning. Volunteers broke a channel to allow a small boat to reach the spot at which the body was found.

According to the Storm Lake Register, Sheriff Dreyer said Mrs. Lundberg had just returned from a trip to Texas. She had been visiting relatives at Newell and started back to Graettinger Saturday morning.

Dr. L.L. Long of Albert City, acting coroner, said death was due to drowning.

Mrs. Lundberg was a former resident of the Marathon community. She has a number of relatives in the Marathon, Laurens, Albert City and Sioux Rapids areas. (Laurens Sun, Laurens, IA, November 12, 1959)

Mr. and Mrs. Glen Grey, Merle and John, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Beneke, Mrs. Carl Werner, Mrs. Minus Abrahamson and Mrs. Helen Malm attended the funeral of Mrs. Gladys Lundberg at the Union Baptist church in Estherville Thursday. Mrs. Lundberg was a twin sister of Glen Grey and a cousin of Mrs. Abrahamson and Mrs. Malm. (Pomeroy Herald, Pomeroy, IA, November 19, 1959)
