Estherville Journalist Dies Tuesday Evening
Hoyt Luithly, managing editor of the Estherville Daily News for 25 years, died Tuesday [August 4, 1964] night at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville of a coronary attack. The 47-year old journalist had been in failing health for some time.Luithly was a noted sportswriter and for many years was on the Iowa Daily Press Association all-state selection board. He was well known in Iowa sports circles.
Survivors include his wife; four children, William (13), Paul (12), Ann (11), and Jane (4); his parents, Dr. and Mrs. W.E. Luithly of Richland; and a brother, Lisle of Columbus Junction.
Services were pending Wednesday morning at the Reese Funeral Home in Estherville. (Spirit Lake, Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, August 6, 1964)
Hoyt Luithly, 47, of Daily News Staff, Died Suddenly Tuesday
Hoyt Luithly, 47, managing editor of the Estherville Daily News, died Tuesday night, a few minutes after he was seized with a coronary heart attack. He had been hospitalized since July 13.One of the most popular and able writers and sports experts in the state, Luithly had been employed at the Daily News since 1939, with the exception of five years in the armed service.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist church in Estherville.

Death by heart attack took a good friend last week, Hoyt Luithly of the Estherville Daily News, who doubled as managing editor and sports editor. . . He was enthusiastic in the support of baseball in the Iowa State League and his voice was an honest one at the various meetings he attended in the selection of all-state football and basketball teams.
