J.W. Lough Dead
This community was shocked Thursday evening by the announcement of the death of J.W. Lough, which occurred at his home in the northeast part of town at six o’clock [September 8, 1904] . He died at the supper table and a few moments before was talking and laughing with his family. When he fell from the chair medical assistance was at once summoned but when the doctor arrived life was extinct and after examination it was found that death was instantaneous when he fell from the chair. Mr. Lough had complained considerably of late about a pain in his heart and had taken treatment for several weeks prior to his death, and although seventy-five years of age, had the appearance of being as well as usual. He was down town in the afternoon and reached home a couple of hours before he died. He was one of the oldest residents of Estherville, having resided here since 1877 and at one time was one of the largest town property holders in the city. He was a man of very good habits and had been a member of the Christian church since its organization in this city and was one of its leading members and supporters. He had been a good citizen and took great pride in building up Estherville with seeing it advance from a small country town that it was when he located here to the city it is today. By his death Estherville has lost a loyal citizen, the community a generous friend and his family a kind husband and father.Funeral services were held in the Christian church Sunday afternoon at three o’clock and the remains followed to there [their] final resting place in the East Side Cemetery by many sympathizing friends.
Besides an aged wife, three sons and three daughters are left to mourn his sudden taking away. They are: Arlando and Lorenzo, Lillian and Martha in this city, Mrs. Luella Colburn, Secor, Ill., and J.W. Lough, Jordan, Minn., all of whom were present at the funeral. At Ripe Old Age
James W. Lough Passes Away on Last Thursday Evening While at Supper Table
James W. Lough passes away very suddenly last Thursday evening, dropping dead while sitting at the supper table. Heart failure was the cause of death. The funeral was held from the Christian church Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock and the interment was in the east side cemetery.James W. Lough was born in Kentucky, March 18, 1829, having celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday last spring. When he was but two years of age his parents moved to Indiana, where he grew to manhood. It was in that state in 1851 that he was married to Alcie Ann Darland, who still survives him. In 1857 the young couple left Indiana and came west, settling first in Scott county, Minnesota. They lived there until 1879 when they came to Emmet county, which had been their home almost continuously ever since.
The deceased has been more or less closely identified with the businesses of Estherville since coming here and few men in the county were better known than he. He always enjoyed the highest esteem and respect of all. He was a man of many splendid qualities and was every industrious and active. He is survived by his widow and six children, three girls and three boys who will have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
Mr. Lough had been in failing health for some time, the decline dating from last February when he had a severe attack of grip. Since that time he had been more or less troubled with his heart, and death was not at all unexpected. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, September 14, 1904)
