Mrs. J.W. Lough, one of our fine pioneer women passed away at her home on Pleasant street on last Wednesday afternoon. The Lough family came here at an early date and have been city builders of the pioneer days. Mr. Lough laid out one addition to the city. He erected the first real opera house in the city and has built many home here. The following obituary has been furnished us of this pioneer lady.Alcy Ann Darland was born at Logansport, Indiana, October 18, 1835. She lived at Logansport until 1851 when she was married to James Warren Lough and there resided until 1857 when she with her husband moved overland to Jordan, Minn., moving later to Estherville, where she has resided the past 36 years.
Her death came after a very short illness dying at 3:20 p.m. June 15, 1927, surrounded by all of her loving children.
To this union were born nine children, four of whom preceded her in death, being Henry H., Rebecca Catherine, Alvis Franklin and John Wesley.
Her loving husband, James Warren Lough passed on before, having died in Estherville September 8, 1904. The only one of her immediate family, Isaac Darland of Audubon, Iowa, survive and mourn with us today.
The surviving children are Martha Jane, Arlando and Lorenzo of Estherville, Mrs. John Colburn of Secor, Ill., and Mrs. J.I. Overholt, Spirit Lake, also fifteen grand children and three great grand children.
Mother Lough became an active member of the Christian church in her girlhood days at Logansport, Ind., and ever since remained a steadfast loyal loving worker in the master’s vineyard, faithful unto death, a loving wife and mother, a loyal friend and neighbor whose first and last thought was in others comfort. Mrs. J. W. Lough Dies at Her Home Here Wednesday
“Mother” Lough Lived Here Thirty-Six Years Preceding Death; One Brother and Five Children Survive
Mrs. J.W. Lough died at her home in Estherville last Wednesday afternoon at the age of 92. She was ill but a short time preceding her death and her great age is held to have been the cause.Mrs. Lough, mother of Arlando and Larenzo Lough and Miss Martha Lough of this city, had lived in Estherville for thirty-six years, coming here with her husband, James W. Lough in 1890.
Miss Alcy Ann Darland was born at Logansport, Indiana, on October 18, 1853, where she lived at the time of her marriage to James Lough in 1851. They lived there for six years and then moved to Jordan, Minn. From there they came to Estherville thirty-six years ago.
Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lough, four preceding Mrs. Lough in death. Those who died were: Henry H., Rebecca, Catherine, Alvis F. and John Wesley. Mr. Lough died in Estherville Sept. 8, 1904.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Christian church and her body interred at East Side cemetery.
“Mother” Lough was a member of the Christian church and an active worker, faithful, loyal and loving.
She is survived by a brother, Isaac Darland of Audubon, and by the following children: Martha Jane, a daughter, and Arlando and Lorenzo, sons, of this city; Mrs. John Colburn of Secor, Ill., a daughter, and Mrs. J.I. Overholt of Spirit Lake, a daughter. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Anna Lough and daughter, Carrie, Mrs. C. Librand and Mrs. T.O. Holmes and daughter, Dora, all from Jordan, Minn., also Mr. and Mrs. J.I. Overholt of Spirit Lake and Mrs. John Colburn of Secor, Ill. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, June 22, 1927)
