Engelbert Carl Thelen, the son of Nick and Katherine (Julic) Thelen was born February 12, 1915 in Breda, Iowa and departed this life on Sunday, May 11, 2003, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa at the age of 88 years old.

He received his education in the Breda schools graduating from Breda High School. Bert then went to Barber school in Sioux City, Iowa.

On November 24, 1938, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Heidenrich in Sioux City, Iowa. He served in the US Army during World War Two from March 1, 1942 until December 1, 1945. Bert worked as a barber in Ames, Carroll and Willey, Iowa. In 1950, he moved to Estherville, where he worked as a carpenter until his retirement in 1976.

Bert was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the V.F.W. Post #3388 of Estherville.

He is survived by his children, Richard Thelen and his wife, Linda of Arlington, Texas; Phillip Thelen and his wife, Carole of Estherville; William Thelen of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Ted Thelen; David Thelen; Jeff Thelen; Pat (Thelen) Rouse and her husband, Wayne; and Sandy (Thelen) Jenson and her husband, Jim all of Estherville; twenty-three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and also by two sisters, Helen Kelly and Leona McCaffey both of Carroll.

He has been preceded in death by his parents; wife; two grandsons, Joey Rouse, Robert Rouse and by nine brothers and sisters. (MC)
