Albert Eugene Sweely, the son of Carl and Sylvia (Stone) Sweely was born March 22, 1929 at Algona, Iowa. He departed this life at the Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa on Sunday, August 6, 2000 at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 14 days.

Gene attended school in Emmetsburg before moving with his family to Helena, Montana where he graduated from high school in 1946. He served in the Army Air Corps before returning to the Emmetsburg area.

On August 9, 1948, he was united in marriage to Mary Moran in Emmetsburg. After their marriage, the couple lived in Spencer before moving to Estherville in 1951. Gene worked at John Morrell for over 20 years, then at ECHO for 18 years. In his free time, Gene enjoyed flying radio controlled planes, hunting, fishing and photography. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, St. Patrick’s Choir, the American Legion and Morrell’s Retirees.

Gene is survived by his wife, Mary of Estherville; two daughters, Patricia Stumpf and her husband, Harold of Alpha, Minnesota; Therese Cohrs of Estherville; nine grandchildren, Toni King and her husband, Dale; Melissa Reetz and her husband, Dan; Shelly Todd and her husband, Terry; Michael Stumpf and Amber; Brian Stumpf; Bridget Stumpf; heather Cohrs; Marcus Cohrs; Joshua Cohrs and also by twelve great-grandchildren, Nick; Austin; Allison; Noah; Jenny; Aaron; Thomas; Tyler; Trevor; Mercedes; Brenden; and Jayden. Gene was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathryn, his parents and his father-in-law. (MC)
