Walter Louis "Walt" Mathine 1926-2003

Walter Louis Mathine the son of Lloyd and Elenora (Block) Mathine, was born September 6, 1926, in Center, Nebraska. He passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 23 days.

He received his education in the rural Center schools and graduated from Center High School.

On April 10, 1950, Walt was united in marriage to Lola Bennett at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Verdigre, Nebraska. Following their marriage the couple made their home and farmed in the Bloomfield, Nebraska area. The family moved to the Estherville area on March 1, 1959 and Walt was engaged in farming. Walt retired in 1988. He enjoyed fishing, reading, traveling, watching the Yankees and Green Bay Packers for hobbies. Most especially Walt enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville.

Walt is survived by his wife, Lola of Estherville; one son, Wayne Mathine and his wife, Gail of Ringsted, Iowa; one daughter, Wynne DeVos and her husband, Jim of Estherville; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his sisters and brother, Bernice Kudera and her husband, Leonard of Plainview, Nebraska; Vernon Mathine and his wife, Elaine of Bloomfield, Nebraska; Betty Kudera of Plainview; and Jeanelle Thelen and her husband, Merle of Seward, Nebraska.

He has been preceded in death by his parents; five infant brothers and sisters; and brother-in-law Stanley Kudera. (MC)
