Estherville – Services for John (Jack) W. McCarthy, 65, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 25th at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Thomas Topf officiating. Legion of Mary will be at 4 p.m. Monday and Vigil for the Deceased at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville. He died June 22 at Holy Family Hospital.Friends may call at 4-9 p.m. Monday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home.
He was born on October 3, 1925 in Freeport, Illinois, the son of Leo and Eva (Wilson) McCarthy. He was educated in St. Mary’s Catholic School in Freeport, Ill. and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was married to Joyce Smith on December 24, 1944 in Kokomo, Indiana and to Arlene Allen on December 27, 1970 in Estherville. He moved to Estherville in 1945 and was employed by Hill Packing Co. and then John Morrell and Company until the plant closed. Then he was employed by Per-Mar Security. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville, the VFW and American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Arlene of Estherville; four sons: Kevin McCarthy of Jackson, Minnesota; Mike McCarthy and wife Jeanne of Jackson, Minnesota; Tim McCarthy and wife Cathy of Estherville; and John McCarthy and wife Marcia of Spirit Lake. One daughter – Mrs. Glen (Sandi) Sunde, Estherville; and two step-daughters – Mrs. Bob (Twyla) Vandenburg of Glenwood, Minnesota and Mrs. Chuck (Sue) Tostenson, Estherville. Other survivors include one brother, Robert McCarthy of Burnsville, Minn. and one sister, Opal Fox of Freeport, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Joyce in 1967. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, Jun, 1991)
