William Francis "Bill" Greene 1911-2002

William Francis Greene, the son of James and Mary (Ryan) Greene, was born June 2, 1911, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and departed this life on Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 90 years, nine months and 16 days.

As a young child Bill moved with his family to Albert Lea, Minnesota, where he attended school. Later the family moved to Fairbault, Minnesota and he graduated from Fairbault High School. On November 25, 1933, Bill was united in marriage to Sylvia A. Lane at Robinsdale, Minnesota. Bill was a United States Government Meat Inspector and following their marriage the couple made their home in Waterloo, Iowa. Later they moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa and he continued his employment as a meat inspector. He served in the United States Merchant Marines during World War Two. He was stationed in the Great Lakes and sailed several times in the North Atlantic Ocean. After his discharge from active duty the family moved to Estherville in 1947, where he resumed his profession as a meat inspector. Bill retired in 1972. Bill enjoyed fishing for a hobby. Sylvia died July 7, 2001.

Bill was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church; the Knights of Columbus; and VFW Post 3388 in Estherville.

Bill is survived by one daughter, Sandra Lyons and her husband, Terry of Leander, Texas; one son, Patrick Greene and his wife, Zola of Estherville; his grandchildren, Jim Lyons of The Colony, Texas; Brenda Lyons of Austin, Texas; Debbie Lyons-McKee of Maxwell, Texas; Ryan Greene of Ames, Iowa; Jessica Greene of Mankato, Minnesota; three great-grandsons, Kevin Lyons, Eric McKee and Ethan James Greene; and three sisters-in-law, Ruth Larson of Green Valley, Arizona, Beryl Anderson of Travis Park, Texas, and Marge Dupont of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bill has been preceded in death by his wife; granddaughter, Stacey; parents; three brothers, Jerome, James, Francis; and two sisters, Marie and Cathleen.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Interment in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Estherville, IA.
