Jackson, Tenn. – Memorial services for John Hassel, 54 of Jackson, Tenn., formerly of Estherville, will be held at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Chapel in Estherville, Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Father Tom Nash will be the officiant. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Estherville. He died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998 at Jackson Madison County General Hospital at Jackson.There will be no visitation prior to services.
He was born June 7, 1944 at Graettinger, the son of Vince and Mabel (Sipes) Hassel, and received his education in the Estherville schools graduating from high school in Estherville in 1962. He then attended Estherville Junior College and also served in the National Guard where he attained the rank of Second Lieutenant. He moved to St. Paul, Minn. in 1967 and began working for Great Northern Railway. In 1973 he returned to Estherville and started his own business, Hassel Realty, a realty and remodeling firm. In 1982 he took a position with Fluor Daniel Construction and lived in Rifle, Colo., Columbia, Mo., and Jackson, Tenn. He was a millwright journeyman, foreman and general foreman while with the firm.
Survivors include his sons: Jim of Pataskala, Ohio and Vince of Des Moines; daughter, Karen Hassel, Champaign, Ill.; grandchildren, Andrew, Sierra and Sage; parents, Mabel and Leo Mitchell, Estherville; sisters, Maxine Gout, Chandler, Ariz.; Marlys Hutchens, Glendale, Ariz.; Dottie Heltloff, Carroll; Mrs. Rodney (Kathy) Ross, Glendale; brothers: Gary, Anaheim; Steve of Jackson, Minn.; Vincent of Chandler, Ariz.; sister, Mrs. Norman (Vineta) Shyrock, Estherville; brother, Morris Mitchell, Silt, Colo.; sister, Colleen Shepard, Mt. Dora, Fla.; brothers, Ronnie Mitchell, Monroe, Wash.; Marvin Mitchell, Graettinger; Jerry Mitchell, Sibley; sisters: Evelyn Knepper, Welcome, Minn. and Debbie Benz, Spencer; 46 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vince Hassel and one sister, Jolene. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 8, 1998)
