Estherville – Services for Edmund Peters, 75, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Tom Nash presider. Interment will be in the church cemetery. He died Tuesday, May 6, 1997 at McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls, S.D.Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville with parish vigil at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Military graveside service will be presented by V.F.W. Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 both of Estherville.
He was born May 21, 1921 in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Lyman and Edna (Shibe) Peters. He attended and graduated from Appanoose Rural High School in Pamona, Kans. He then attended central Missouri State in Warrensburg, Mo. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War Two, as a navigator on a B-17 crew in the Eighth Air Force and was stationed in England. He participated in D-Day invasion of France. His aircraft was shot down and ditched in the English Channel on June 12, 1944, and he retired from the military in June, 1945, due to injuries received in combat. He was united in marriage with Sophie L. Haase on August 3, 1946 at Topeka, Kans. He worked for John Morrell and Co. as a hog buyer from 1943 until retiring in 1982. The couple lived in Topeka until 1951 when they moved to Sibley then to Estherville in 1955. Sophie died June 13, 1978. In November, 1982 he married Dorothy Sorenson in Estherville. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and VFW, both in Estherville.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Estherville; daughters, Susan Pollen, Ocala, Fla.; Shelly Peters, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Katie Peters, Forest City; Nancy Peters, League City, Texas; Jenny Peters, Iowa City; Mary Ellen Peters, Des Moines and Teresa Peters, Salem, New Hampshire; a son, Martin Peters, Pomona, Kans.; step-sons: Henry Sorenson, Corning; Michael Sorenson, West Des Moines; Gary Sorenson, Schaumburg, Ill.; Mark Sorenson, Oklahoma City, Okla.; step-daughters: Mrs. Jeff (Rosemary) Croner, Christine Rawlings, and Mrs. Jerry (Annette) Dalen all of Estherville; Dr. Margaret Sorenson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; Mrs. Wayne (June) Neal of Plano, Texas and Karen DeMuth, Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren; a sister, Dixie Brunton, Topeka, Kans.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sophie, three daughters, two sons and his parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 8, 1997)
