Spirit Lake – Services for Mildred Kenney, 84, of Spirit Lake, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Henry-Olson-Funeral Home in Estherville with Father Albert O. Grendler officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Estherville. She died Monday, February 23, 1998 at Hilltop Care Center at Spirit Lake.Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home in Estherville.
She was born Sept. 29, 1913 at Gilmore City, the daughter of Dennis and Sophia (Grindling) Kenney. She moved with her family to a farm near Dolliver as a young girl. She attended school there and graduated from Estherville High School in 1932 after moving to the Estherville area. She worked at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville and a government hospital in Denver before attending normal training school. She began teaching on a ranch in Wyoming. Later she received her elementary education degree from Buena Vista. She taught 39 years first in Dolliver, Ledyard, Estherville, Alta and Storm Lake. Later in the Ft. Dodge school system for 27 years until retiring in 1982. She moved from Ft. Dodge to live with her brother near Spirit Lake two months ago.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ft. Dodge and Ft. Dodge retired teachers association.
Survivors include a brother Patrick Kenney of Spirit Lake, step-nephews Donald Knapp and Dean Knapp of Spirit Lake.
She was preceded in death by her parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 24, 1998)
