Gruver – Services for Ben [Benedict C.] Hassel, 77, Gruver, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville, with interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
Mr. Hassel died Tuesday [September 11, 1979] evening at Holy Family Hospital, Estherville.
Rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville. Friends may call at the funeral home until time of services.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hassel, he was born March 14, 1902, at Ottawa, Ill. He received his education in Ottawa and Emmet County schools and was married to Mayme Boecker on Feb. 5, 1928, at Ruthven.
The couple farmed east of Graettinger until moving to Gruver in 1938. After moving to Gruver Mr. Hassel worked for the Rock Island Railroad, Hill Packing Company and Fagre Construction Company until retiring. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
Mr. Hassel is survived by his wife, Mayme, Gruver; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Mardel) Heywood, Estherville; four grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Hassel, Estherville; and one sister, Mrs. Myron (Veronica) Kurschner, Mundelein, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 13, 1979)
