Estherville – Services for Mrs. Myrtle J. [Juanita] Garrelts, 80, will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Thomas Topf , presider. Interment will be in the church cemetery. She died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1992 at Holy Family Hospital.Visitation will be from 4 – 9 p.m. Thursday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home with Legion of Mary Rosary at 4 p.m. and Parish Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born March 10, 1912 in Graettinger, the daughter of William and Theresa (Zeizer) Boecker and was a graduate of Graettinger High School. She was united in marriage with Alvin Garrelts on Jan. 6, 1934 at Graettinger. Following marriage the couple farmed in the Graettinger area. In 1950 they moved into Estherville where she was employed at Holy Family Hospital cafeteria from 1959-64. The couple owned and operated Peoples Annex and Lounge from 1964-1978. She then returned to Holy Family Hospital employed in the housekeeping department until retiring in 1982.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Altar and Rosary Society and the VFW Auxiliary.
Survivors include sons: Thomas of Aurora, Colo. and Eldon of Estherville; a daughter, Mrs. Rene (Judy) McMahon, Buffalo Center; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters: Mary Hassel, Gruver and Mrs. Kenneth (Lillian) Thompson, Estherville, and a brother, Russel Boecker of Graettinger.
She was preceded in death by her husband June 13, 1978; her parents; infant daughter; two infant grandsons and six brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 7, 1992)
