Byron Cushman 82 Dies
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Mahlum and Anderson chapel for Byron Cushman, 82, who passed away last Thursday evening after an illness of two weeks. Rev. Mark Underhill of Superior officiated at the services. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.

Mr. Cushman had been a resident of this community for the past fifty years. Although his farm was located in Dickinson county, being located six miles southwest of Estherville and Emmet county and had many friends among the older people in and around Estherville. He was born Feb. 22, 1857, in Linn county. After his marriage on Feb. 24, 1885, he and his bride lived on a farm in Linn county for a few years and in the late eighties bought their farm in Dickinson county where they resided until about three years ago when they retired from active farming and moved to Estherville to make their home.

Mr. Cushman is survived by his wife, one daughter, five sons, twenty-one grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. The daughter is Mrs. Ray Ross of Estherville. The sons are George Cushman of Kelso, Calif., Earl Cushman of Bancroft, Iowa, Johnson Cushman of Dickens, Iowa, Paul Cushman of Terril, Iowa and Leo Cushman of Estherville. Superior – Obituary of B.M. Cushman
Byron Milton Cushman was born in Rock Island, Ill., Feb. 22, 1858, to Henry and Martha Cushman. He came to Linn county, Iowa, with his parents when seven years old. He grew to manhood there. His first wife, Sarah Ann Kirk, died after a short married life. Three children were born of this union: Edward who died in 1927, George of Kelso, Calif., and a child who died in infancy.

Feb. 24, 1884 he was united in marriage to Sarah Margaret Hemphill in Linn county, Iowa. Six children were born to this union: Earl Henry of Bancroft, Johnson of Dickins, Paul of Terril, Leo of Estherville and Barbara May Ross of Estherville. Bertie Lee died when two years of age.

In 1890 he moved with his family to Dickinson county. Dec. 16, 1936 he and his wife took up residence in Estherville.

He became ill Jan. 22, 1940, and passed away Feb. 1, 1940 at the age of 81 years, 11 months and 9 days.

He was interested in public activity and for a number of years active in church life.

He is survived by his widow, four sons, one daughter, 21 grandchildren and one brother William, who lives in Wisconsin.

Funeral services were held Feb. 4 in the home of the deceased and in the Mahlum and Anderson funeral home, conducted by Rev. Mark Underhill, pastor of the M.E. church in Superior.

Pall bearers were John Slifritz, Otto Reuland, Charles and James Lewis, Rueben Green, Axel Bringle. Interment took place in the East Side cemetery, Estherville.
