William G. Cockburn, 86, Dies at Estherville
William Goring Cockburn, 86, a resident of Emmet county for 56 years, died at 2:50 Friday afternoon at the home of his son, Donald. Mr. Cockburn had been in poor health for more than a month.

He was born in Midnapore, India, Aug. 9, 1853. His father, George Ferguson Cockburn was high commissioner of Patma, India, and a member of the Bengal civil service. His mother was Charlotte Ann Bishop, daughter of Gen. Bishop of the Royal English Army. He was the grandson of Lord Cockburn, renowned Scottish lawyer, whose statue stands in the city of Edinburg, Scotland.

Mr. Cockburn, with his brothers and sisters was taken back to London from India by their mother to receive their education. He was 5 years old at the time. The family lived at Kings Farm Lodge near London.

Mr. Cockburn attended Eaton college and studied law in his uncle’s law office. He came to United States on June 12, 1872, when he was 18 years old. He settled in Decorah, where he met and married Anna Charlotte Hubbell, April 15, 1875. The observed their 60th wedding anniversary April 15, 1935.

His mother gave him an 80 acre farm, located 6 ˝ miles northwest of Estherville in Emmet township. The farm was purchased from the English-American land company.

Mr. Cockburn moved with his wife to this farm in 1884, the year the present court house was built. Mr. Cockburn lived on his farm until Oct. 1938. His wife died June 4, 1938. Since leaving the farm, he has made his home with his son Donald in Estherville.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. C.A. Malander, Oaks, North Dakota; Mrs. George Lingenfelter, Renville, Minn., and Mrs. Clark Lingenfelter, Estherville; three sons, Harry Cockburn, Sioux Falls, S.D., Keith Cockburn, Terril and Donald Cockburn of Estherville; and two sisters both of whom live in England. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 Monday in the Mahlum & Anderson chapel and at 3 o’clock in Grace Episcopal church. The Rev. A.L. Schrock conducting the rites. Burial being made in East Side cemetery. – News (Terril Record, Terril, IA, March 28, 1940)
