Robert J. "Bob" Calhan 1917-2009

Robert J. (Bob) Calhan, 92, a 6-year resident of Ginger Cove in Annapolis, MD and previously of Clinton, MD for over 20 years, died on Friday, December 4, 2009 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD.

Born September 25, 1917 in Estherville, Iowa, where he was raised. He graduated from Estherville Junior College in Iowa. He entered the Army Air Corps in July 1940 and flew B-25’s during WWII in the African Campaign. After retiring from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel., he worked as an Operations Manager for the Andrews Federal Credit Union at Andrews Air Force Base and in Wiesbaden, Germany. During his military career he was stationed in Utah, Maryland, Japan and Newfoundland. Mr. Calhan received the Air Force Commendation Medal twice, Air Medal, and National Defense Service Medal w/ Bronze Service Star.

Bob was a member of the Lions Club in Clinton, the Ginger Cove Men’s Group and a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church. He enjoyed flying, golf, reading, travelling, and spending time with his family.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, of 67 years, Margaret A. Calhan, who died in July 2009. He is survived by his children, Michele L. Groot of St. Leonard, MD, Robert J. Calhan, II, of Annapolis, MD, Cecelia L. Atkinson of Kingwood, TX, Kathleen M. McSorley of Huntingtown, MD and John H. Calhan of Owings, MD; father-in-law of Mary Jo and Barbara Calhan, Michael G. McSorley and the late Paul C. Groot and Craig Atkinson. Brother of Leo Calhan of Chicago, IL , Jim Calhan of Lakewood, CA, and the late Michael Calhan, Frances Murphy and Bernadine Furhman. Also survived by 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to Bob’s Life Celebration on Sunday, December 13 from 4 to 6 pm at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, December 14 at 10am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville, MD. Interment Arlington National Cemetery with Full Honors on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 3pm. (Kalas Funeral Home, online)
