Mrs. George Calhan Dies; Rites Pending
Mrs. George W. (Hildegarde) Calhan, 79, Estherville, died at 11 p.m. Jan 2 at her home.Funeral arrangements are pending at Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville.
She was born Nov. 23, 1894 to Mr. and Mrs. Michael D. Coyne at Morris, Grundy County, Ill. She received her education from Grundy County schools, graduating from Angela’s Academy at Morris, Ill. On Feb. 10, 1915, she was married to George W. Calhan at Seneca, Ill.
Following their marriage they came to Iowa and farmed north of Gruver for several years. In 1921, they moved to a farm east of Estherville, where they have lived for the past 53 years.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Altar and Rosary Society, Holy Family Auxiliary and a charter member of Center Country Club.
Survivors include her husband, George; four sons, Lt. Col. (RET) Robert J. Calhan of Weisbaden, Germany, Michael Calhan of Estherville, Leo Calhan of Lombard, Ill, and Lt. Commander James R. Calhan of NAS Fallon, Nev.; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Bernadene) Fuhrman, Estherville, and Mrs. Frances C. Murphy, Clark Air Force Base, Philippines; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandsons; one sister, Mrs. William J. Dooley of Houston, Tex., and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters and an infant grandson. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 3, 1974)
Mrs. Calhan’s Services Set For Saturday
Funeral services for Mrs. George W. (Hildegarde) Calhan, who died Jan. 2 at her home, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. [Note: per cemetery records, East Side]Rosary will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville. Friends and relatives may call at Fuhrman Funeral Home until time of services Saturday.
Honorary pallbearers are E.G. Stavros, Dr. L. F. Hoffman, Albert Dean, Kenneth West, Harry Jesperson, and Jack Wolf.
Active pallbearers are Alan Kreiger, Wayne West, Gus Ramsey, Arthur Hageman, Jim Ricke and William Pierson. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 4, 1974)

ESTHERVILLE--Service for Mrs. George W. Calhan, 79, of rural Estherville will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery [burial in East Side].
Mrs. Calhan died of a heart attack Wednesday at her farm home.
Friends may call at Fuhrman Funeral Home, where rosary will be recited 8 p.m. today.
