Former Estherville Man Passed Away Tuesday
Alex Buck Died at Home in New Mexico – Funeral Held Here Friday Afternoon
Alexander Buck, well known to people in this community, passed away at his home in Alamogordo, N. Mex., last Tuesday [October 28, 1924] and the remains were brought to Estherville Thursday evening for burial. Mr. Buck had been a victim of the dreaded disease, tuberculosis, for the past ten years but not until the day that he passed away was he seriously ill, when he had a hemorrhage. Mr. Buck had a large circle of friends in this city and was well liked because of his manly qualities. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved members of the family in their hours of sorrow. The following obituary was written by Rev. R. T. Chipperfield and read at the funeral services which were held Friday afternoon: “Alexander Vaughan Buck was born February 4, 1873, at Morris, Ill. He was one of a family of ten children born to Thomas and Elizabeth Buck. His early education was in the district schools. At the age of 22 he and his twin brother, Andrew W. Buck, settled on a farm in Emmet county, Iowa, and for a number of years live and labored together. On March 22, 1911, he married Miss Carrie Grems, of Gruver. For a period of three years they continued their farming operations in this vicinity. In 1914 they moved to Texas and two years later to New Mexico, where they continued their residence until his death. During the last ten years of his life he put up a heroic battle against tuberculosis which constantly threatened him. During this time he displayed constantly traits of fortitude, courage and patience. He never complained during all the years of his unequal struggle. To the last he was interested in helping others. In his family he showed himself a devoted husband and a loving father. He enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew him. His family consisted of one daughter, Irene, now 12 years old. In addition to his wife and daughter there survive him his aged mother residing at Morris, Ill., also five brothers and sisters: Mrs. A. V. Swaider [Swaidner?] Armstrong, Mo.; Albert Buck, Tularosa, N. Mex.; Mrs. Nellie Rumble, Morris, Ill.; Archie E. Buck, Mazon, Ill.; Andrew W. Buck, Estherville; John W. Buck and Jesse A. Buck, Morris, Ill., all of whom, with the exception of John, were present at the funeral. George Buck, a cousin from Audubon, Iowa, was also present. Though a sufferer for years the first immediate premonition of his decease was last Tuesday morning when he had a hemorrhage about one o’clock from the effect of which he passed away about fifteen minutes later at Alamogordo, N. Mex. The funeral services were held at the home of his twin brother in Estherville, Iowa, on Friday afternoon in charge of Rev. R. T. Chipperfield and he was laid to rest in the East Side Cemetery.
