W. H. Brown, father of A.C. Brown, of this city, died last Friday at his home in Dakota city after a short illness with pneumonia, aged eighty-three years, three months and fifteen days. Mr. Brown received word Thursday that his father was seriously ill and left at once for Dakota City, reaching there while his father still retained his mental faculties. The funeral services were held in the Congregational church at Dakota City, of which the deceased had been a member more than fifty years, at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon.Wade Hampton Brown was born near Lake Champlain in New York October 11, 1822. When a boy he went to Connecticut and engaged in railroad construction work, going from there to Ohio in 1850. He was married in 1851 at Mansfield, Ohio, to Miss Rosanna Leedy. The couple subsequently resided in Indiana and moved to Humboldt county, Iowa, in 1870, settling on a farm near Dakota City. In 1876 the family moved to Dakota City to enable the children to attend the town schools. They afterwards spent several years on the farm but for the past fourteen years have been residing in Dakota City. The deceased is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. Sarah Hawkins, Mrs. Elizabeth Emrie and W. A. Brown of Dakota City, J.L. Brown of Eagle Grove and A.C. Brown of Estherville.
Mr. Brown had visited at the home of his son in this city and had many friends here who will regret to hear of his death. He was a man of the strictest integrity and an exemplary citizen and enjoyed the universal esteem of the community in which he lived. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, January 31, 1906)
Died – Brown, at his home in Dakota City, Iowa, Friday morning, January 26th, 1906, of pneumonia, Wade H. Brown, aged 83 years 3 months and 15 days.
Wade H. Brown was born in Willsboro, Essex County, New York, October 11th, 1822. He was there reared, receiving a common school education. In 1849 he went to Connecticut and engaged in railroad work for a short time. On October 6th, 1852 he was married to Rosana Leedy, of Richland, Ohio.
In June 1852 he went to Kosciusko county, Indiana, where he cleared a farm out of the heavy timber and farmed until 1870 when he sold out and came to Humboldt county locating in Dakota City. About 1876 he moved onto the farm in Norway township where he farmed until 1892 when he gave up active life and moved to Dakota City where he resided till the time of his death.
In 1858 he joined the Presbyterian church at Pierceton, Indiana, and subsequently became a member of the Congregational church at Humboldt, of which he was a devoted and consistent member until the day of his death.
He leaves an aged widow, five children; two daughters, Mrs. Sarah L. Hawkins and Mrs. Elizabeth Emery, and three sons, William O., Ariel C. and John L., 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren to mourn his departure.
The funeral services were held from the Congregational church on Saturday, January 27th, at 2:30 o’clock p.m., Rev. H. D. Harr officiating, burial taking place in Union Cemetery. (Humboldt Independent, Humboldt, IA, February 1, 1906)
