Don Billings Dies Here at Hospital
Donald Billings, 60, of Estherville, an area resident for the past 30 years, died yesterday at 3:30 p.m. at Holy Family Hospital. Death was attributed to cancer.He had been hospitalized in Rochester, Minn., last May and had undergone surgery. He had been hospitalized since Dec. 13.
Family services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Reese Funeral Home. Public services will follow at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church, Rev. Howard Wakelin officiating.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday and until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, when the casket will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of service. The casket will not be opened following the service. Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
Donald Billings was born Nov. 2, 1904, at Lanesboro, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Billings. He received his education in Emmetsburg schools. He was married Jan. 13, 1930, to Susan (Peggy) Baker at Fairmont, Minn. Following their marriage they farmed near Emmetsburg until 1936. They then moved to a farm near Estherville.
Mr. and Mrs. Billings moved to Estherville in 1940. He was employed for a time by Emmet County. In 1951 he went into the excavating and gravel business. For the past four years his son Duane has been associated with the business.
Mr. Billings was a member of the Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy, one daughter, Mrs. Don (Juanita) Mahin of Estherville; one son, Duane, of Estherville and six grandchildren. Two brothers, Charles of Dyke, and Theodore of Moorland, and one sister, Mrs. Mae Sully, of Sibley, also survive. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 6, 1965)
