Crash Kills Local Woman
Estherville – Emmet County recorded its third 1976 traffic death Tuesday [March 30, 1976] night when Jennie Rose Biery, Estherville, was fatally injured in one car crash north of Estherville at the intersection of county blacktops N25 and A17.Mrs. Biery, driver of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, reported to the Estherville Police Department at 7:59 p.m.
A passenger in the car, Robert Biery, her husband was taken to Holy Family Hospital, Estherville, where he was reported to be suffering from lacerations, broken ribs and shock.
According to Iowa Highway Patrol officers, who investigated the accident, the Biery vehicle was traveling south on N26, went off the west shoulder, skidded across the road into the east ditch and ended up on its top. The Estherville Police Department and Emmet County Sheriff’s Department were also at the scene of the accident.
Don (Roundy) Helmers, who reported the accident, said that two cars slowed up at the scene of the crash, then left as he was approaching the scene.

Estherville – Funeral services for Jennie Rose Biery, 68, Estherville, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Frederick Glasser officiating. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery here.Friends and relatives may call at the Henry Funeral Home, Estherville, from 9 a.m. Friday until time of services.
Mrs. Biery was fatally injured Tuesday evening in a one-car accident three miles north of Estherville at the intersection of Emmet County blacktops N-26 and A-17.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spencer, Mrs. Biery was born Feb. 4, 1908, at Greely, Neb., and received her education in O’Neil, Neb. schools.
She married William G. Hurt and, after Mr. Hurt’s death, married Robert R. Biery Dec. 10, 1950, at Jackson. The Bierys made their home in Estherville since 1950. She was a member of the Union Baptist Church of Estherville.
Mrs. Biery is survived by her husband, Robert Biery; one daughter, Mrs. Harold (Lozene) Johnson, Windom, Minn.; four grandchildren,; two great-grandchildren; five brothers, Ellsworth Spencer, Hanlontown, Glen Spencer, Tulsa, Okla, Chester Spencer, Madison, Ill.; Walter Spencer, Van Nuys, Calif.; and William Spencer, San Francisco, Calif.; five sisters, Mrs. Richard (Marie) Hart, Woodland, Calif.; Mrs. Frank (Helen) Schostalk, Platt Center, Neb.; Mrs. Leo (Barbara) Ward, Las Vegas, Nev.; Mrs. Robert (Janita) Howe, Van Nuys, Calif.; and Mrs. Robert (Frances) Gillespie, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, one daughter, one granddaughter, one grandson, one sister and two infant brothers and sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 1, 1976)
