Louis K. Barbas Dies; Funeral Set for Saturday
Louis K. Barbas, 74, died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday [August 19, 1970] after suffering a heart attack. He had operated a shoe shop in Estherville from 1940 to 1967.He was born in Amelias, Greece, coming to the United States at the age of 16. He worked at many trades and suffer the hardship of making his own way without being able to speak English and having no relatives in this country.
He settled in St. Paul and on Feb. 4, 1923, he was married to Pauline Davis O’Neil. He owned and operated a shoe shop in St. Paul for 14 years, coming to Estherville in 1937 where he later started his own shop.
He was a member of the Greek Orthodox church and was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, serving in every capacity.
He was Commander of Esdraleon Commandery No. S2, High Priest of Royal Arch Masons, and Watchman of the Shepherds of White Shrine.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Gus Barbas and William J. Barbas of Lincoln, Neb.; a daughter, Mrs. Melvin (Faye) Anderson of rural Estherville; and 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother and one sister in Greece.
He was preceded in death by a son, Steve, in 1964, his parents, and one brother, Ted.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Grace Epsicopal church, Father Bryce Hunt officiating. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites. Fuhrman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 20, 1970)
