Bernard Woods of Gruver Dies From Operation
Young Man is Victim of Appendicitis
Gruver, March 13. This community was shocked to learn of the sudden death of Bernard Woods, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Woods, who died Sunday [March 11, 1928] morning at an Estherville hospital following an operation for appendicitis. He was apparently recovering from the operation when he suddenly became worse.

Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. at the home and at 10 a.m. at the Catholic church in Estherville. Lester Bergeson, Gus Ramsey, Alan Krieger, Lester Grems, Wayne Spaulding, and Wilbur Brod, all schoolmates, were the pall bearers.

Bernard was a kind, conscientious young man, loved in the home, and respected by his school mates and friends. He was a member of the graduating class of 1927 at the Gruver high school.

He is survived by his parents, three sisters, and two brothers. Many friends and relatives of the family came to Gruver to attend the funeral services. (Estherville News, Estherville, IA, March 14, 1928)

The community was shocked and grieved Sunday when it learned of the death of Bernard Woods, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Woods. Bernard had undergone an operation for appendicitis Saturday morning at the Birney hospital and passed away Sunday morning at 4 o’clock. He had been ill a few days with the flu, which weakened his condition. He would have been twenty years old Saturday, March 17th. He came with his parents from Illinois several years ago and has resided near Gruver. He was a member of the graduating class of 1927 of Gruver high school, being a beloved member and ranking high in his studies and has since assisted his father with the farm duties. The funeral was held from the Catholic church in Estherville Tuesday morning and the body laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. He leaves to mourn his loss, his father and mother, three sisters and two brothers to whom the sympathy of their many friends is extended.

There was no school in the Myhre school for several days last week, owing to the death of the teacher’s (Miss Marie Woods) brother. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, March 14, 1928)
