Long-Time Resident of County Dies
Edward Joseph Smith, 82, of near Raleigh, a long-time county resident died at 2:50 p.m. yesterday at Holy Family hospital. He had been hospitalized since last Wednesday following a stroke.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 1, 1873 in Johnson county near Iowa City. His family moved to Green county while he was young and he moved to Pocahontas about 1900. He had resided on a farm in Twelve Mile Lake township near Raleigh since 1904.

He was married to Julia Flaherty, Feb. 14, 1906 at Pocahontas. His wife preceded him in death.

Mr. Smith was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic church.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Mary Tiffany, Gowrie; a brother, Hugh, Emmetsburg; two daughters, Mrs. Urban Pluth, Estherville and Mrs. Jake Phillips, Jackson, Minn.; two sons, Ward of Terril and Orville, living at home; and nine grandchildren.

A recitation of the rosary will be held tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. at the Smith home. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s church with burial in St. Patrick’s cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 15, 1955)
