James Scollon Died at Local Hospital
James Scollon passed away at the local hospital Wednesday [February 28, 1945] evening at 6 o’clock, after being confined there for care since November 27, 1944. Mr. Scollon fell at the time, fracturing his hip and was brought to the hospital for care. His condition had grown steadily worse and several times his life was despaired of.

No funeral arrangements had been made yet this morning. The body is at the Donovan Funeral Home. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, March 1, 1945)

James Scollon, 71, passed away February 28, 1945 at the Spirit Lake hospital, after a long illness. He was born at Belle Plaine, Iowa on January 18, 1874. He was the son of John and Mary Scollon. He had been a resident of Dickinson county for over thirty-five years. For the past five years he has lived in Spirit Lake.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Fr. Keane, at St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Estherville Saturday morning at 9:00 o’clock. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery in that city.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother and brother John. He leaves three sisters and four brothers to mourn his passing.

Attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. James Parks and daughter Eileen, Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Hyde, Felix, Frank and Ed, Mrs. Minnie Wilson of Sioux Falls and Mrs. James Murray and Mrs. J. J. Scollon of Lohrville, and Peter and Mary who are at home. Mr. Scollon was known for his kindness as a brother and neighbor and will be missed by all who knew him.
