Nicholas [Nickolaus] Oberweiss [Oberweis] Dies at 83
Nicholas Louis Oberweiss, 83, died at 8:30 last night of a heart attack while en route to Holy Family hospital. Mr. Oberweiss had not been feeling well for the past three days but it was not thought that his illness was serious until last night.He was born on Feb. 8, 1872 [per cemetery records, 1873], at Nideranven, Luxembourg, the son of John Louis and Susan Poos Oberweiss. Married on March 26, 1894, to Catherine Schlentz of Hann, Luxembourg, he and his wife made their home in Luxembourg, until 1908 when they came to the United States.
They settled first at Matlock, Iowa, and in 1925 moved to Estherville where he had since lived. Mr. Oberweiss was employed by the street department of the city until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died April 14, 1944 and by two daughters, Adele, 1 year and Therese, 1 ½ years.
Survivors of Mr. Oberweiss include two daughters, Mrs. Mary Tracy and Mrs. Leona Origer Higby, both of Estherville, 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Sternborg’s funeral home and funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s church, the Rev. Father J. H. Duhigg officiating. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 7, 1955)
Out-of-town relatives here for funeral services of Nickolas Oberweiss included two grandsons, Lt. Leo J. Origer of Dayton, Ohio, and Capt. Donald J. Tracy of California. Another grandson, SP3 David G. Origer is stationed in Germany and was unable to be here. Also here were Mr. and Mrs. Ray Mabee of Mankato, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Broadie of Spirit Lake.
