Alan Hoffman dies after tractor upsets on farm
Alan John Hoffman, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hoffman, rural Estherville, was one of at least six persons to die in Iowa on motor vehicle accidents over the weekend.

The Hoffman boy was driving a farm tractor in a pasture near his farm home at about 4:10 p.m. Saturday [June 26, 1971], when the vehicle struck a stump hidden in some tall grass, causing the tractor to flip over. The steering wheel pinned the boy to the ground, crushing his chest and causing instant death, according to Emmet County coroner Dr. Robert Dawson.

A sister of the Hoffman boy, Myrna Mae, 14, was riding on the tractor at the time of the accident. She was taken to the Holy Family Hospital, where she was treated for multiple bruises and abrasions and released on Sunday.

Mrs. Hoffman was reportedly the first person to reach the scene of the accident, and pulled Myrna from under the overturned tractor which was being used to pull a farm wagon.

Alan John Hoffman was born April 26, 1958. He received his education at St. Patrick’s School in Estherville, having finished the seventh grade at the termination of classes this spring.

Hoffman, Carroll; and his maternal grandfather, Conrad Tiefanthaler, Breda.

Funeral services for Master Hoffman will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, with the Msgr. Lawrence Hoffman, Algona, officiating. Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

A recitation of the Rosary will be at the Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville, at 8 p.m. Monday. Fuhrman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
