ESTHERVILLE — Services for Ethel Katherine Hoffman, 84, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Brian Hughes presiding. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. at Henry-Olson Funeral Home in Estherville with Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m.
She died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Ethel Katherine (Tiefenthaler) Hoffman, daughter of Conrad and Mary (Pittman) Tiefenthaler, was born on April 28, 1924, in Wall Lake.
On June 4, 1946, she was united in marriage to Leonard Hoffman at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. The couple lived in Carroll until moving to a farm east of Estherville in February of 1947. They operated this farm until Leonard’s death and she continued to reside there until her passing.
Ethel worked as a registered nurse at Holy Family Hospital and Good Samaritan Center in Estherville. She enjoyed needlework, quilting, gardening, reading, and working on the family genealogy. She especially enjoyed being with her family and attending family gatherings.
She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. She taught religious education and served on many committees.
Ethel is survived by her children, Diana and Larry Clark of Merrill, Dennis and Jean Hoffman of Estherville, Sharon Andersen of Yankton, S.D., Marcia and Paul Haywood of Milford, Jean and Melvin Fish of Yankton, S.D., Myrna Hoffman of Ames, Joyce Hoffman of Quincy, Ill., Kevin Hoffman of Estherville, Craig Hoffman of Estherville, and Lynn and Shelly Hoffman of Clinton; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rose Marie Hoffman of Graettinger, and Almyra (Marlo) Weitl of Templeton; brothers-in-law, Lambert (Marge) Hoffman of Graettinger, Norbert (Millie) Hoffman of Carroll, Joseph (Dorothy) Hoffman of Ruthven, and Alphons Brincks of Carroll; and sister-in-law Arlene Eischeid of Carroll.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in 1992; one son, Alan, in 1971; one grandson, Andrew; one great-grandson, Caleb; her parents; sisters; brothers-in-law Evelyn (Norbert) Ludwig and Ruth Brincks; brothers and sisters-in-law Ervil (Helen) Tiefenthaler and Paul (Mary) Tiefenthaler; and her father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Mary Hoffman.
