Louis Greener Dies; Rites Are Thursday
Was Railway Express Agent
Louis W. Greener, 71, retired railway express agent of Estherville, died yesterday at 1:15 p.m. at Holy Family hospital following complications from a hernia operation. He had been about ready to go home from the hospital Sept. 25 when he suffered a relapse.He was born Jan. 22, 1879, in Jefferson, [Jeffers?] Minn., and received his education in and around Jefferson. On Oct. 30, 1900, he was married to Margaret O’Donnell of Marquette, then known as North MacGregor.
The couple came to Estherville about 16 years ago where Mr. Greener was employed for 13 years as Railway Express company manager at the Rock Island depot here. He retired three years ago after many years service with Railway Express.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Estherville.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harold Bacon of Estherville; and six sons, John of Chicago, Joe of Dubuque, Ambrose of Dubuque, Leo of Davenport, Louis, Jr., of Marquette, and George of San Diego; 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife 13 years ago.
Rosary will be recited by Knights of Columbus members tonight at 8:30 in Sternborg Funeral chapel and 9 o’clock tomorrow night at Sternborgs.
Requiem high mass will be offered Thursday at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Estherville with his grandson, Father William Greener of Waterloo, officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s cemetery in Estherville. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 3, 1950)
