S. W. Morton Passes Away
One of Emmet Count’s Old Citizens Succumbs After Long Illness
Served As County Supervisor
Deceased Had a Large Circle of Friends Who Will Sincerely Mourn His Demise
Sherman Wade Morton, one of Emmet county’s most prominent and respected citizens, passed away at the Harcourt Hospital on Christmas day. Mr. Morton had been somewhat of a sufferer for the past year, and entered the hospital for the purpose of an operation. It was found he was severely afflicted with cancer and there seemed to be but little hope for him from the start. He recovered somewhat after the operation, but his sturdy being was unable to withstand the effects of the terrible hold the disease had on him. He had passed the stage where medical aid was of not any avail. The deceased was born in Anawon, Ill., in February, 1861, and lived at that place until the age of seven, when he moved with his parents to Princeton, Ill., where he lived until he moved to Emmet county in the year 1895. Since coming here he has endeared himself to people throughout the county. For several years he served on the Board of Supervisors, and his fearless and honest methods with the county affairs were admired by all.
In the year 1886 he was married to Lottie Smith Taylor, at Princeton, Ill., and to this union there were born three children, M. Taylor Morton, who is now attending the state university, Owen E. Morton and Katheryn Morton.
The funeral services were held from the M.E. church of this city at 2:00 o’clock on last Sunday afternoon, the Rev. Case officiating. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. The citizenship of the county joins a loving wife and children in mourning the death of a kind and generous neighbor and a fond husband and father.
